Driving Tips

International Drivers

Australians drive on the left side of the road and Australian law requires that a seatbelt be worn at all times. If you plan on hiring a car with an international license you will need your passport and a translation of your international license if it is not in English.

Distances

The Northern Territory has very large distances between destinations, so ensure you have enough fuel between stops, plan your stops beforehand and carry extra fuel just to be safe.

Railway Crossings

Make sure you stop and look to your left and right before crossing a railway as not all crossings have audible warnings for drivers.

Floods

Due to high rainfall in the wet season, there are often flooded roadways around Darwin and the Northern Territory. Do not attempt to cross floodways unless you are sure of the depths and potential road damage. If in question, call the local police station for information.

Drinking and Driving

The blood alcohol limit in the NT is .05% Blood Alcohol Content. However, the safest is to not have any in your system at all.

Fatigue

If you are driving long distances, it is recommended that you get out of your car every two hours and walk around for 15 minutes. Designated rest areas are in most areas making this convenient for drivers.

Getting Lost or Breaking Down

If you become lost or break down, do not leave your vehicle as it is much easier for a rescue crew to find a missing vehicle rather than a missing person. If you must leave your vehicle, always tell someone where you plan on going and when you think you will return. Be cautious on your water consumption if you are not on a main road or near any shops.

Driving in the Dark

Avoid driving after dark as there is generally wildlife and cattle on the outback roads. It is good to note that hire car insurance is void for accidents after dark, outside of built up areas. Also, beware of large trucks (road-trains) as they often travel during the night.

Road Closures

The NT has extreme weather, especially during the wet season, so always check for road closures before you take off for a trip.
