Prickles Overview
Oh Prickles how I love thee. Prickles is a Tex-Mex style Mexican restaurant located in Parap. This Darwin Mexican restaurant has a very relaxed atmosphere with plenty of Mexican décor around the restaurant. Prickles is the only Mexican restaurant in Darwin (that I am aware of) so it can get very busy and bookings are an absolute essential.
Ambiance
The restaurant is a little small, but they definitely make good use of the space. The lights are dimmed and the atmosphere is very relaxed and enjoyable, although when it is a busy Saturday night, the waitresses can be buzzing around quite quickly which can sometimes take away from the relaxed ambiance. However, this Darwin Mexican restaurant is a fabulous night out with a big group, your family and can even be a nice night out with your partner.
Service
Service at Prickles is hit or miss. Sometimes it is spot on and drinks and food are ordered promptly with the food to follow. Other times, you have to ask for your food a few times and even worse meals are brought out at different times. It really depends on the night I think for what kind of service you will be getting. For the most part, the staff are very friendly and usually check up for you if you are asking for your food or drinks.
Food
Where to begin. I always start off my meal with a delicious frozen margarita-strawberry is my favourite, but Prickles has BYO (wine only) options as well. The trio of dips are a must have entrée every time I go Prickles. Other great entrees are the great balls of fire, the jalapeño bread with roasted garlic or even the mini tacos. Mains serving sizes are huge and I can never finish them. Even the big
burly boys I go with struggle eating everything on their plate. The enchiladas are delicious, as are the burritos, but truthfully, everything at this Mexican restaurant is really good and does not disappoint. Prices for mains start at about $20 and entrees start at $7.
For dessert, I get the chocolate mud cake which is delicious. I usually share this with someone else at the table because I am so full and because it is really rich!
Vegetarian’s Note
Prickles is one of the few restaurants in Darwin where there is more than one option to choose from for vegetarians. There are plenty of entrees to choose from and almost all of the mains have substitute options in place of meat! Whenever I am trying to choose a restaurant with my vegetarian eater, Prickles comes to mind because of the diverse menu options.
